South Cambridge Striders – running safely in the dark
As the clocks change and winter draws near, runners who head out in the early morning or late evening may find themselves running in the dark. With a few simple precautions, you can stay safe and enjoy your run, whatever the time of day. Be visible: Wear bright or reflective clothing and consider using a small light so that pedestrians, cyclists and drivers can see you. Make sure you can see where you’re putting your feet, too.
Choose your route carefully: Stick to familiar, well-lit routes where possible, and let someone know roughly where you’re going and when you expect to return. Avoid isolated areas if you can. Stay aware: Keep the volume low if you use headphones, or leave one ear free so you can hear traffic, cyclists and other people around you. Stay alert to your surroundings. Take extra care around traffic: Use crossings where available and don’t assume that drivers have seen you.
At junctions and driveways, slow down and check carefully before continuing. Run with others: One of the best ways to feel safer running in the dark is to join a local running group. South Cambridge Striders meet on Tuesday evenings from 7pm, offering a chance to run with others and meet fellow local runners. A little preparation, and good company, can help make running in the dark a safe and enjoyable part of your routine.
